MICA personal statement
Art is not simply visual. It does not only consist of color and line, rhythm and repetition. In fact, the very elements upon which it is built are not confined only to the tip of a pen or texture of a brushstroke, but are ubiquitous—omnipresent—in the world around us and utilized in all walks of life. These components are reflected in the poet who sees color in a vowel and rhythm in its placement, and the scientist which seeks value and depth in the procedures entertaining curiosity. The mathematician comprehends space in the angles of a plane and gives form to their acuity, while the historian wonders at the serene repetition and sweeping movement of the race which is able to capture the essence of life through no more than the higher-association regions of the human brain.
Art exists within everything. It is not simply the practice of depicting experiences, but lives in the heart of each man and woman alive. It is the driving force, the sole ember burning at the core of every human interest, academic or otherwise. To be a true artist, one must not merely possess the skill to replicate what is observed; one must be overcome with a thirst to understand and the proceeding passion to express. The true artist is well-read.
